Xander te West (b. 1992) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Amsterdam. Alongside his job in the energy transition, he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2024.
Xander te West turns everyday household items, construction materials and electronics into sculptures and/or installations. His focus lies in accentuating and revealing the inherent qualities of his chosen materials. He challenges himself to highlight the most familiar or mundane features of his subjects as subtle as possible. There is often a cry for attention embedded in his work that says: ‘Hey, look over here, you might want to see this!’
Xander’s work is informed by consumer culture, contemporary technology and production methods, both in terms of the chosen materials and the creative process itself.
Lately he’s drawn inspiration from fakeness and the “two-dimensionalisation” by both screens and prefabricated materials. He wonders what effect it has on a society when artificial plants, wallpaper and other items serve as stand-ins for the “real” thing.
